The Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit investigated and charged a father-son team who defrauded potentially hundreds of undocumented individuals by taking their money and promising them legal residency for which they did not qualify. The defendants advised the victims to lie on their residency applications and to the immigration hearing officer. Most of the victims were deported as a result of the defendants fraud. Only seven victims were still available to testify for prosecution. Both defendants were charged with seven felony counts of grand theft and seven felony counts of subornation of perjury. Both defendants pleaded guilty to the felony counts and were sentenced to 180 days in Orange County Jail, ordered to pay restitution to the seven victims, and placed on three years of formal probation.
