PEOPLE v. JANET HSUEH CHEN

Chen left her 4-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl alone in an apartment for three weeks while she went to North Carolina and China.  A neighbor heard the children crying in the adjacent apartment and called the police.  When the police arrived, they found the two children alone.  The boy had a bruise on his forehead and the girl had a cut on her thumb from using a kitchen knife.  They ate TV dinners and dry cereal because they had run out of milk.  The 7-year-old was told by her mother to take care of her brother while she was away.  The Orange County District Attorney’s Office filed four felony counts of child abuse and endangerment.  The defendant pleaded guilty to all counts.
