PEOPLE v. LINDA EVANS FITNESS CENTER, Inc. (LEFC)

Women-only gyms located throughout Orange County went out of business and attempted to transfer its members to 24 Hour Fitness, a co-ed gym.  The LEFC members’ contracts stated that upon any closure, the members would be transferred to a “comparable” facility.  Many of the women paid considerable amounts of money for pre-paid long term memberships at the LEFC all-woman gym. LEFC refused to refund the pre-paid memberships to over 400 Orange County women who complained to our office. The Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) initiated an investigation into the business practices of this company.  After completing our investigation, the OCDA negotiated a settlement with LEFC wherein they and 24 Hour Fitness agreed to refund all of the money owed to these 400 former members that did not want to join the co-ed 24 Hour Fitness.
