Computer technician Fernando Monje Orozco was charged with 68 felony counts relating to identity theft, grand theft, unlawful use of computer data and computerized account information belong to his former employer, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI), and the unlawful possession of credit card account information pertaining to over 77,000 accounts stolen by him from VPI data bases during his employment. Orozco used the information to make online purchases and then had the purchases shipped to his parents house. Police found at Orozcos residence a printed copy and computer disk with a list of the victims identifying information and credit card account data used by the victims to pay their insurance premiums online.
Of the 60 attempted identity theft transactions known to law enforcement, only 20 were successful, resulting in a known loss of over $28,000 to merchants and vendors. The remainder of the attempts, valued at over $100,000, were cancelled by the vendors or by the credit card companies before the transaction could be completed.
Orozco pleaded guilty to 33 felony counts of grand theft, identity theft, and fraudulent access of a computer database. He was sentenced to four years and four months in state prison and ordered to pay restitution to VPI in the amount of $73,734, as well as an additional $28,000 restitution to Telephase, Kohls Jewelers, K&L Wine Merchants, Walmart, and Gateway.
