A hard-core juvenile gang member from
Orange was arrested and detained at the Orange County Juvenile Hall for substantial gang graffiti damage he and a gang associate did in a city park. While pending trial on charges of felony vandalism and active participation in a criminal street gang, the juvenile gang member engaged in five separate fights against rival gang members in Juvenile Hall. He was charged with five additional felony charges of battery done to benefit and promote a criminal street gang. While pending trial on those charges, he fought with yet another rival gang member, knocking a tooth out of the victim and necessitating oral surgery. New felony assault charges were filed. Eventually, all of the charges against the juvenile gang member were sustained at trial (the juvenile court equivalent of a guilty verdict in adult court), and he was sentenced to the California Youth Authority for a maximum term of 23 years and 4 months.
