Markland Manufacturing Inc., the chrome and nickel platers for a motorcycle parts company, were convicted of three felony violations of the California Health and Safety Code in an environmental protection case for unlawfully disposing of hazardous waste in Orange County. The waste, including nickel, was found in tubular filters that had been discarded in dumpsters at a facility that did not have a permit from the Department of Toxic Substance Control. Markland Manufacturing Inc. was also unlawfully discharging a liquid with a PH below 2, which is considered hazardous waste in the Health and Safety Code. Under the settlement, Markland Manufacturing Inc. will pay $351,429 in fines and restitution for the cost of the investigation.
